The Game of 8 ball pool originated in the USA in the late 1800's. The game differs from the UK version as the American game of pool uses 2 1/4" balls, as opposed to the standard 2" balls used on UK tables. The use of this size ball means that the table pockets have to be much larger than those of UK pool tables. Pocket size id the main difference between American pool tables and UK pool tables.
The US game is usually played on an 8 or 9ft American pool table, the construction of which is similar to UK pool tables - using sectional slate. For an American pool table the slate bed is covered in a napless speed cloth, and the V profile cushions are cut away at the pockets to make the potting of the balls easier.
